Randolph Engineering: Archer Frames

Archer1

A brand we love, but haven’t talked about nearly enough here, Randolph Engineering, has just launched a new line of their miliary grade aviators – the Archer.

Named after a Samuel Archer King (apparently a famous ballooning pioneer), these frames debut Randolph’s new Lite Lens technology, their lightest lens ever; made from a hypoallergenic macromolecule (whatever that is, I’m sure it’s awesome). As proud owners of their limited-edition Michael Bastian X Randolph Engineering frames, we can attest to their quality and durability. These certainly will not disappoint.

The frames start shipping to retailers TODAY – so be on the lookout. Also stay tuned for much more from these guys here on IET in the coming months…

Field Tested: Upstate Stock Knits

I don’t care what anyone tells you – just because it’s March, doesn’t mean that winter is over.

Enter Upstate Stock – a brand we’ve been keeping tabs on for a while. These guys are doing it right. Understated, well-designed, expertly crafted goods from upstate NY – giving you everything you need, and nothing you don’t.

They were kind enough to send us a set of ragg wool gloves, as well as a beanie, and let me tell you – we are super impressed. The quality of construction is apparent – super thick, high-quality wool, and nice, minimal detailing around their logo. Those labels are hand tacked by their craftsmen in New York – extra work? Sure…but completely worth it.

If we may make a suggestion – try out the fingerless gloves. Your iPhone will thank you. We were a bit skeptical about the look at first, but frankly, they look great AND are super functional. You’ll be amazed how life-changing it is to tie your shoes, zip your jacket and handle your phone with your gloves on.

As luck would have it – they are running an amazing end of season sale so get yours to get through the rest of this cold weather here.

The brand also produces candles, apothecary and a curated selection of leather goods – much more on these later!

#RancourtReleases: The Flint Kudu Suede Collection BY RANCOURT AND COMPANY

Kundu Suede Collection Rancourt

Yes, more awesome-ness from our friends at Rancourt and Co.

On the heels of their Essex Collection (zero pun intended), the brand has released an all-new, all-suede line for spring, featuring Kudu leather, which is a type of wild African Antelope (seriously). Don’t feel too bad for the little guys though, they are hunted as a means of population control as well as to feed local people, while you get to tell everyone about the exotic origins of your new boots. Apparently this leather is super soft, and super durable – we’re really excited to go hands on with these in the near future.

Of course, it wouldnt be a Rancourt without some type of Horween and they’re using their Casco black leather for lining here.

As if the upper wasn’t enough, the soles on these things look amazing – using an updated version of Rancourt’s “Trooper Sole” – two leather midsoles, with a triple leather wedge heel sandwiched between them, and finished with the Vibram mini-ripple sole. Interesting indeed.

You can get yours here.

#RancourtReleases: The Essex Collection by Rancourt and Company

Rancourt & Co. continues to keep their line fresh by applying a new leather collection to their classic set of styles, this time using a natural-colored, full vegetable tanned leather from, who else, Chicago-based Horween Leather.  These things are no joke – drum tanned using the same natural extracts from tree bark that is used to tan Horween’s world renowned Shell Cordovan, and hand-built in Maine as they’ve been doing for years.

As they say – good things come to those who wait, and the patina on these should be well-worth the break-in time.

Get yours here.

Q&A: Apparel by PW

Instagram is a wonderful thing. We’ve made so many amazing connections, and discovered some truly unique brands through this platform, and Apparel by PW is no exception. These guys are working hard to craft whimsical, high-quality goods that are Made in the USA without pretension. Lucky for us, we had the chance to talk to them about how this whole thing got started, and  what’s driving their line forward.

Tell us about where this began….

It all began with a chance finding of an old Singer Sewing machine in the basement.  Fast forward several months, and we were creating goods for ourselves that we couldn’t find anywhere else. Seeing as Steve had previously started a chapter of a national fraternity while at UConn, we perfected our trade and learned a great deal while making custom fraternity gear – selling belts, sunglass straps, and pocketed T’s.  This time really helped us discover that we were onto something and the initial capital raised helped us turn the hobby into a company.

After much experimentation our formal product launches began with our Summer Collection in 2014.  This is when we released The Original Sailor’s Knot Straps (turks head braided sunglass straps), leather bow tie straps, and our signature Leather & Ribbon straps.

We dig the logo – but, what is it exactly?

Being a New England Brand, it was important for us to show the heritage of our products.  We offer a lot of patriotic styles so we wanted a patriotic logo. That’s when we came upon (by a friend) the Flag of New England.  The story goes that New England ships would fly the original Flag of New England to show that they were locals and not the British.

The Pine Tree logo is a really original looking tree.  We knew it would be a conversation point and that once people learned what it is they would appreciate it.

What drives your designs? Where are you pulling inspiration from?

Our designs are driven by the ‘good times’ in life.  We have a lot of summer lifestyle themed straps because everyone enjoys the beach, BBQs, sailing, boating, and the coastal life in general.  The more collegiate styles are also inspired by focusing on the less serious things.  We want to offer items that will stick out and someone will say…

“Holy shit where did you get that?”

Why “Made in USA”? Tell us why it is so important to you…

People don’t realize how badly the textile industry has been crushed by outsourcing.  We want to support the Made in the USA movement but not exploit it.  Whether or not the consumer directly cares if the product is outsourced or
not, we care.  We want to support hard working Americans and the jobs that manufacturing offers.

If we can make it in the USA we will do it

What’s next for you?
We’re currently finalizing the work of revamping our product lineup. We’ve listened to the feedback from the last year and made tons of improvements.

Our new styles (2.0s) will be slimmer, lighter, slightlysmaller, and overall more comfortable.  We also have a ton of new designs.
I’m really happy with how the new styles have turned out and I think people will be very impressed with the new quality.

As always, we’re looking to expand to relevant markets so always keep an eye out; we’ve got a few tricks up our sleeves in the next few months so stay tuned!

Stay tuned for more from these guys as we head into warmer months, and be sure to check them out for yourself here.
